From May 28 to 31, a training course “Teaching and Assessment Methods in Medical Education” was held at East European University (EEU). The event was initiated by the Faculty of Healthcare Sciences and organized by EEU’s Lifelong Learning Center (LLC).
The course aimed to enhance the qualifications of academic staff involved in the implementation of the faculty’s educational programs, focusing on modern methodologies in teaching and assessment within medical education.
The training was led by Dr. Ayhan S. Kaliskan, Associate Professor at the United Arab Emirates University. He has many years of experience in the administration, monitoring, and teaching in medical education and serves as a member and evaluator for various certification and examination boards in Turkey and Europe.
The course included both theoretical and practical components, providing participants with the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and develop relevant practical skills. The training program covered the following core topics:
- Introduction to contemporary assessment systems in medical education, knowledge evaluation, and the development of open- and closed-ended questions;
- Performance assessment, Objective Structured Practical Examination (OSPE), and Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE): organization and piloting;
- Workplace-Based Assessment (WPBA): Mini-Clinical Evaluation Exercise (Mini-CEX), Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS), 360-degree evaluation, Portfolio;
- Problem-Based Learning (PBL), including scenario development, group organization, facilitation, and assessment of PBL sessions.
The course was conducted in an interactive format, with participants actively engaged in both theoretical sessions and practical exercises.
The training was fully funded by East European University.
At the end of the course, participants were awarded certificates.
