The project deals with the impact of the Mtkvari River, as the most important factor in the restoration and historical development of Tbilisi.

The historic districts of the city are the strongest space of visitor attraction and serve as profiled spaces for the potential of the tourist infrastructure. Tbilisi’s urban fabric has been formed along the river Mtkvari River valley for centuries; Along this valley, on both banks of the river, most of the historic-cultural and architectural monuments of Tbilisi are gathered. As a result of countless enemy incursions and natural-climatic conditions, many historic spaces of the city, landscape zones, buildings were destroyed; Part of the cultural heritage, survived from these events was sacrificed by reckless urban planning changes in the modern era, on the basis of which part of the city buildings is covered by Mtkvari. The significant damage was to the river banks, near Metekhi Bridge, Abanotubani, Ortachala Garden, etc. Periodically, during the declining the water level, fragments of the history of these areas of the city are visible in the riverbed – the formation of walls, foundations of buildings, etc.

The aim of the grant project is study Mtkvari River space through identifying favorable spaces of historic Tbilisi to focus on the development of urban tourism infrastructure of the city.
